Traffic Circle 101 - posted Monday, January 25, 2010

Did you have questions about how to drive in the traffic circle? Here is a helpful diagram   to help you navigate your way around the traffic circle.

Pedestrians at roundabouts

Pedestrians have the right-of-way and drivers must yield to a pedestrian in the crosswalks at the entrance and exit of the roundabout. The penalty for failing to yield to a pedestrian is $575 and four demerit points.

Traffic circles

A traffic circle is a raised island located in the middle of an intersection. The main purpose of traffic circles is to reduce vehicle speeds and to reduce vehicle-to-vehicle conflicts at intersections. The shape of the island may vary according to the intersection layout and may not be circular but is treated in the same manner at all times. Motorists are required to travel around the island in a counter-clockwise direction. The traffic circle is regulated by Yield signs on the approaches and the motorist entering the circle must yield to traffic in the circle approaching from the left.
